What should I wear in Yellowstone?

What clothes should you pack on your trip to Yellowstone and Grand Teton?

No matter the time of year, or the weather, wear lots of layers so you can mix and match to adjust to the temperature.

In the warmer summer months, light long sleeved shirts, hiking pants, a hat, good walking shoes, and a waterproof jacket are standard. You can also bring a warm mid-layer fleece or puffy, liner gloves and a knit hat for the cool mornings and evenings.

In the high altitude environment in Wyoming, temperatures fluctuate from morning to afternoon, sometimes over forty degrees in one day. The warmest month is July-with highs in the 80s and lows in the 40s. Both June and August can have snow, although it is a rare occurrence and doesn’t last long on the ground.

The sun’s rays are more intense at high altitudes, where they have less atmosphere to travel through. Sunburn can happen quickly in Yellowstone, because the average elevation is 8,000 feet.

Layer up and see what unfolds.
